To awaken each morning to a day that is entirely yours is truly extraordinary. It is a difficult thing to describe — outside the realm of ordinary life, but a daily event as an artist-in-residence. My time here facilitated an intensity of focus and freedom I had never experienced previously. I discovered a tremendous amount about my studio practices, made considerable technical and conceptual progress in my work, and found lasting friendships with remarkable people.

The China Trip: Philip Tinari

The following morning, we met with Phil Tinari - the incoming director at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art - for breakfast. He is a critic and curator based in Beijing and has an excellent knowledge of the contemporary art scene in China. It was a wonderful conversation and exchange of ideas. I left the breakfast with Phil feeling energized. The remainder of the day was spent catching up on work emails and setting up/confirming additional meetings for throughout the week.

On Thursday morning, I visited the National Museum to see the impressive exhibition of large, wall-sized paintings made during and after the revolution. Afterwards, I made a site visit to the Beijing American Center, which provides cultural resources about the US and organizes events and exhibitions. I also met with a husband and wife artist team and toured their studio.
